Sustainability
We’re working to make luxury kinder to people and planet, and are focused on leaving a lighter legacy.
The most sustainable bag is the one you carry for life
At Strathberry, we believe real luxury is rooted in care - for craft, for the people who create and carry it, and for the planet we call home. You can feel it in the fine-grain leather that carries the mark of talent passed down through the generations of Spanish artisans who handcraft our bags. You can see it in our silhouettes that are designed for life, not for trends.
We’re proudly progressing on our journey, constantly challenging ourselves to explore more sustainable practices; from the sourcing of raw materials and how we design and manufacture, to our packaging, our sites and boutiques.
Our Products
We are committed to producing quality products that will stand the test of time, removing the need for excess purchasing and slowing down over consumption.
Our products are created in small batches and are not mass-produced. Each Strathberry piece takes some of the world’s most talented artisans a minimum of 20 hours to meticulously craft by hand, and it is this commitment to craftsmanship which creates a bag that will last a lifetime.
We design for circularity, creating timeless, long-lasting pieces that can be passed generation to generation.
Our Materials
We use only the highest quality materials in the manufacture of all Strathberry products, and are committed to our materials having a low impact on the environment in how they are sourced and produced, from animal welfare, to the impact on farming communities.
We source all of our leather in the EU from tanneries which are fully audited or individually certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), the globally recognised auditing body representing responsible leather sourcing. Through their accreditation, we can ensure that these tanneries are compliant with environmental best practices, and are following guidelines for continual improvement.
We’re currently using a range of other lower impact materials, such as our suede, which produces 0.8kg less CO2/m2 than conventional suede. Our organic cotton uses non-toxic chemicals in its production, which improves soil quality and saves water. All of our intricate silk designs are digitally printed; a technique proven to produce the lowest carbon footprint of any printing process.
We’ve also created collections from leather offcuts, introduced a vegan grape leather range in 2023 to minimise our waste, and will soon introduce our care and repair service to extend the life of our products even further.
We’re proudly in progress on our sustainability journey. We constantly challenge ourselves to look for a better way, which led us to create the dual purpose dustbags you know and love, and power our Edinburgh Townhouse with 100% renewable energy.
Our People
People are at the centre of Strathberry. Our partners and suppliers are an extension of our team. We celebrate and encourage transparency between between maker and wearer, and the product journey, with each of our products coming with a signed card to certify its meticulous craftsmanship and quality.
We value our artisans and ensure that our workshop team are paid fair salaries that are higher than minimum wage, and that they receive other benefits. Our workshops are regularly audited, making sure they comply with health and safety codes of conduct and our unwavering company-wide ethics.
At Strathberry we work as partners to support supplier businesses, forward planning in collaboration with our suppliers to ensure stable production volumes, and a stable workforce.
Our Planet
We remain committed to ensuring all internal energy usage throughout our Head Office, workshops and retail stores is provided by a 100% renewable energy provider, actively reducing our CO2 emissions.
In working with a global shipping company, committed to minimising their environmental impact, we hope to minimise our carbon footprint on all deliveries and internal stock movements - both domestic and international.
We’re continually looking for the best solutions for end of life and recycling, actively working with Dumfries House on upcycling and deadstock projects.
By conducting annual audits and identifying ongoing opportunities for improvement within our internal operations, we strive to create awareness and encourage sustainable staff practices.
Acting with a positive environmental impact in mind, we can ensure that all our tissue paper, outer cartons and enclosed literature are fully recyclable and FSC certified. Our dual-purpose dustbags are made with organic cotton and recycled polyester handles, produced from recycled bottles.
